Kipaipai Workshops Summer Residency in Kona, Hawai'i
Congratulations to the 2022 Hawai’i Artist in Residence:
Elyse Pignolet
Born in Oakland, CA, Elyse Pignolet is an American with Filipino heritage based in Los Angeles. Working primarily in ceramics, her work has been inspired by numerous social issues and urban themes. Her works attempt to relate the traditions of ceramics and the permanence of the medium to the fleeting and transitory nature of the contemporary world. She has completed several public art projects including three large murals at the SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco and the Gaffey Street Public Swimming Pool in Los Angeles’ San Pedro neighborhood.
Kipaipai Workshops, in partnership with Donkey Mill Art Center, announce their first joint artist residency in Hawaiʻi. This residency will provide the selected artist with an immersion in nature, community engagement and concentrated time to research and conceptualize future projects. It is a 30-day residency taking place in July 2022. This residency is focused on offering one artist (and their immediate family) a respite from their regular studio practice and focus on introspection, research, conceptualizing, and strategizing future projects. The selected artist will be offered one month housing in Kailua-Kona, Hawaiʻi, in July 2022 which does not include a studio. This residency is a partnership between Kipaipai Workshops and the Donkey Mill Art Center near the village of Hōlualoa, Hawaiʻi. As part of the residency, the selected artist will lead several workshops/community engagements during the Donkey Mill Art Center’s Youth Summer Art Experience programs which focuses on environmental and cultural connections. There may be opportunities for the chosen artist to collaborate with local artists, and participate in the Donkey Mill’s studios.
