Artists-in-residence: Jennifer Gunlock and Christine Huhn

Congratulations to Jennifer Gunlock and Christine Huhn, the recipients of the 2023 Kipaipai Workshop / Joshua Tree Center for Photographic Arts Artist in Residency. Jennifer and Chrissy were selected through a competitive process based on their excellent photo-based work and proposed project focusing on the plight of Joshua trees, threatened by climate change, development and large scale industrial solar and wind energy. They will each spend three weeks this Fall in Joshua Tree at JTCPA Studio House working on their projects.

About the residency

Kipaipai Workshops, in partnership with Joshua Tree Center for Photographic Arts, has announced an artist residency in Joshua Tree, California. This residency is open to English speaking established photographic artists seeking immersion in the extraordinary Mojave Desert. The selected artists will receive a three week residency taking place in Fall 2023. This residency offers the selected artist a respite from their daily life and regular studio practice for introspection, research, conceptualizing, and creation of photo-based work about the unique, iconic and threatened Joshua tree and their fragile ecosystems.

The artists will be housed in a private and quiet one bedroom home with additional studio room in North Joshua Tree, 4 miles from Joshua Tree Village and 10 miles from National Park entrance. (Car is a must, no children, no pets, no smoking, vegetarian cooking only in the house.) The artists-in-residence are responsible for their own travel expenses, food, materials and other expenses. Wifi is provided. Computer labs, printers and darkrooms are not provided. A modest honorarium may be provided depending on the proposed project.
